DECISION

It amazed her as she sat in the darkness of her room, how the ring had been so ornately woven into its intricate design and yet, upon her hand, it felt as heavy as a boulder. The silver metal could have been shackles and the diamond a massive rock.

She stared at its brilliance as if the significance of it weighed her down. A part of her noted it had substantial value, but the knowledge made little impact on her. Solomon could have given her a curtain hook and the symbolism behind it would not have escaped her.

Before last night, she could have continued to lie to herself. She could have simply accepted their marriage was simply a business arrangement between two people for the mutual benefit of each other. Hadn’t she said that in so many words?

Yet now, after last night, the ring became a glaring reminder of her place in life as a married woman with a husband that wanted her. Desired her.

A tear fell down her cheek, and she wiped it away.

She couldn’t determine if the tear was one of sorrow or joy. More aptly, the ice from the inside of her melted and leaked through her eyes.

A man wanted her for the first time in her life. The joy coursed through her like a gush of fire, a flow of lava.

How long had she prayed for a man to want her? How long had she been ugly, unloved, and hopeless? A girl skinny, odd, and eccentric?

The doors on her memory opened and she could remember walking next to Leah while they went to school. She’d hear the boys whistle after her sister as they tried to hit on her. She saw Blaze go berserk as one boy in particular touched her behind, and she nearly broke his finger. She could remember the talent agent who came to visit her mother and father about signing up Leah as a child model. He ran away when he very gently suggested she cut her hair, and she nearly screamed down the house in protest. When Leah became homecoming queen for her senior year, she glowed and sparkled. Then she’d almost lost her crown when she pushed the homecoming king down the stairs because he tried to get fresh with her.

Vibrant, fiery, insane Blaze. For all her temper, was normal.

Cold, demure, calm Icy. For all her control, was abnormal.

And now she was being treated like a normal woman with a husband that wanted to sleep with her.

Celeste cried in earnest now, tears of rage, sorrow, and happiness all rolled up inside her. God had answered her prayer and then slammed the door in her face. It didn’t matter what she or Solomon wanted. God would not let her.

Her hands rolled up in fists as her nails made deep grooves in her palms.

Last night had been the most amazing night of her life. The feel of Solomon’s fingers on her person, the touch of his lips and his declaration of intent had been unexpected.
